Star-Crossed - Barbara Dee Review

So I first heard about this book on Tumblr. The author's daughter had made a post about when she was younger and realised that she started to have feelings for a girl at her school and had told her mum about it so her mum wrote a book about it so that other young people going through the same thing would have something to relate to.

The main character, Maddie, starts to notice the new girl, Gemma, at school. Soon they are both cast in the school play, Romeo and Juliet and Maddie starts to realise that she likes Gemma as more than a friend.

I like that the entire novel is a modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet except without the tragic ending.

I really enjoyed the little nods to Shakespeare throughout the novel. The ice-cream store that Maddie hangs out with her friends is name Verona's the town where Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is set in. The shopping centre where Maddie goes to buy a dress for a school dance is called Mantuas, the town where Romeo is banished to.

This novel was more about friendship than it is a love story but that's what it so great. Maddie came to terms with how she was feeling with the help of her friends and they helped her understand that how was feeling was OK and valid.

This was such a fun, sweet and quick read and I plan to read more novels by this author as I really enjoyed her writing style.

5 out of 5 stars!
