End of Year Book Tag

1. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish? No. 2. Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year? I'm in the southern hemisphere so this question doesn't apply but I'm also not much of a seasonal reader anyway. 3. Is there any new release that you are waiting for? There are none. 4. What are 3 books you want to read by the end of the year? Queen of Nothing - Holly Black The Sky Weaver - Kristin Ciccarelli Anne of the Island - L M Montgomery 4. Is there a book that could still shock you that could become your favourite of the year? Probably Queen of Nothing. 6. Have you started making any reading plans for 2020? Yes. Read 1 classic a month, finish all the backlisted books on my kindle and finish popular series I have started in previous years.

Infinity Son - Adam Silvera

Image
Infinity Son is Adam Silvera's first fantasy novel and it is truly magical, I mean there are phoenixes and honestly that just one of the many reasons to pick up this novel. It's fast paced and quick and easy to read. While most fantasy novels start of slowly and can leave you confused while the author explains the magic system and world, Infinity Son begins with a bang and things just keep escalating from there. While this is an urban fantasy and not a high fantasy, the magic system is quite involved and you piece together bits and pieces throughout the novel about its history which honestly makes it easier to absorb than reading about it all in one hit. I loved how even though it's a fantasy novel, there are references to Youtube and Instagram, among other things and it honestly just makes the story more fun in my opinion. Adam Silvera is one of the rare YA authors that I have come across where the teenagers talk in slang and it comes across as believable and n

Kingdom of Ash - Sarah J Maas (Throne of Glass #7)

Image
I finally made it to the last book in this epic series and wow what a ride it was! So many things happened over the course of this series and there were so many characters I came to love/hate. Overall this entire series was a wild ride that had me feeling so many things from, hate to love, happiness to sadness. This last book was everything. I really enjoyed where she went with the story line and the characters, however I did feel that certain characters deserved better, yes even the ones I said I didn't like in the past. The best part of this book was when the different groups started to meet up with each other. I loved seeing the little reunions, it made my heart very happy. I kind of wish there was another book so that I can live in this world a little longer but I definitely feel that theses characters have been through more than enough and deserve some peace and quiet so when I am missing them, then I will just reread the series. I would definitely recommend

Tower of Dawn - Sarah J Maas (Throne of Glass #6)

Image
Tower of Dawn follows the perspective of Chaol as he travels to the southern continent to see if he can heal his injury as well as recruit the Khagan to help assist in the war. I wasn't sure how I would feel about this book as I was eager to continue with Aelin's journey and story line to see what happened next but I loved this so much! I loved all the new characters, Irene the healer especially. I like that we had already met her in the Assassin's Blade and that now we got to see her story play out. Borte one of the Ruk riders was especially hilarious and I wouldn't mind a spin of series of her adventures. I feel her and Aelin would be fast friends and can't wait to see if they will actually meet.  I flew through this book. I think I read it faster than any of the others and once again I am a huge Chaol fan, don't know what I was thinking saying I wasn't sure I liked him anymore.  Can't wait to read the epic conclusion to the series! 5 o

I'm still trying to decide between V and RM.

Aurora Rising - Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman (The Aurora Cycle #1)

Image
Jay and Amie have done it again. They have created another sci-fi that I will love and cherish forever. A none too small feat for someone who rarely likes or reads sci-fi. Aurora Rising follows a group of misfits in the year 2380 on their first space mission.  Tyler Jones is the golden boy squad leader, who the night before he is to pick the squad of his dreams inadvertently finds himself rescuing Aurora (Auri) a girl that has been trapped in interdimensional space in a cryo-sleep for 2 centuries and misses the draft and finds himself stuck with the dregs of the academy. Making up the sorry excuse for squad 312 is  Scarlett, sarcastic twin sister of Tyler, a sweet talker who is as gorgeous as her brother and has the ex boyfriends to show it.  Cat, tomboy pilot who is definitely not in love with her best friend Tyler.  Zila a genius sociopath who is a little too trigger happy with her stun gun around her squad mates.  Fin, grumpy tech support of alien race with an

Sweet Valley High - Academic All-Star? - Katy Rex & Devaki Neogi

Image
I grew up reading the Sweet Valley High and Baby Sitter's Club book so when I saw that Sweet Valley was being adapted into a graphic novel I knew I had to read it! Unlike the Baby Sitter's Club graphic novels, this Sweet Valley High novel is not just the graphic version of a book from the original series, it's a whole new story feature the characters we know and love but with a modern twist. In Academic All-Star, Jessica falls in love with her professor and decides to act more like her studious twin Elizabeth so that he will fall in love with her. Hijinx ensue. A very common theme that happened in the original series but I thought that the graphic novel version handled it better than the original would have. The use of texting and instagram accounts gave this book the modern feel as well as the pop culture references. While it was at times cringy it was still a fun read and I felt the characters were very true to the original ones that Francine Pascal created.

Empire of Storms - Sarah J Maas (Throne of Glass #5)

Image
In Empire of Storms, our rag tag group of friends are on their way to gather an army to defeat Erawan. I loved seeing them all work together even when they were trying not to kill one another. It finally started to feel like all the pieces were coming together, right up until the ending when it all went to hell.  I don't even know how to feel about that ending. It makes me question how she is going to end this series. Will she break my heart...probably. I'm not ready but also dying to finding out. I loved seeing the interaction between all the different characters in this group. Also loved seeing some old characters come back into the story. Manon is also certainly starting to grow on me which is something I never thought I would say but here we are.  The next book in the series is told through Chaol's perspective and is a parallel novel to Empire of Storms so it looks like I will be waiting a while to see how this series wraps up. Definitely excited and nervou

The Remnant Chronicles - Mary E Pearson

Image
The Remnant Chronicles is a trilogy following Princess Lia, First Daughter who should have the gift of sight.  The first book, The Kiss of Deception starts with Lia about to be wed to a prince she has never met to secure and alliance between two kingdoms, She flees on the morning of her wedding day and starts a new life in a distant village. Unbeknownst to her, the jilted prince sets out to find her. An assassin is also sent out to kill her. The pair show up in the village where Lia has made her new life and Lia soon starts to fall in love with one of them. The best part about this book is the fact that you don;t know who the prince is and who the assassin is. You are in the dark as much as Lia. The novel is a whole lot of fun trying to work it out until it is revealed. The second and third books, The Heart of Betrayal and The Beauty of Darkness are a whirlwind of drama. Filled with more lies and betrayal then you can imagine, you travel with Lia throughout the kingdoms mee

Mid Year Freak Out Tag 2019

1. What is the best book you have read so far in 2019? It would definitely have to be Finale by Stephanie Garber. My love for each and every one of the books in the Caraval series is embarrassing. I love them so much! You can read my Finale review here . Pretty sure the past two years I have picked the other books in this series for this question. 2. What is the best sequel you have read in 2019? The best sequel is definitely The Caged Queen by Kristen Ciccarelli. While I loved the first book in the series, the characters in this book were everything! I loved them so much. I loved that this book followed different characters than the first one but that you still got to see the original characters in this one as well. 3. A sequel that has come out this year that you haven't read but really want to. The Princess and the Fangirl. One of my favourite books is Geekerella and I honestly can't wait to read this one and hope to see some of the same characters in this one. 4

The QB Bad Boy and Me - Tay Marley

Image
If you are looking for a fun, quick read then this is the book for you. This book is full of cliches and tropes but that's exactly what makes this an enjoyable read. Dallas is your typical, 'not like other girls' cheerleader and Drayton is your typical bad boy quarterback. You're probably rolling your eyes as you read this but trust me, it works. Dallas knows exactly what she wants in life, a dance scholarship to CalArts and nothing and no one will get in her way, until Drayton literally crashes into her life and suddenly she is left wondering whether or not she needs the good looking bad boy in her life.  While this book is set in high school, I think it would have worked so much better had the main characters been in college. They did not act like your typical teens, more like college students. They stuff they got up was not typical high school behaviour, yes teens go to parties and drink in high school but this was stepped up a notch, more like how colle

May Reading Wrap-Up and June TBR

Image
I finished a decent amount of books in May and even had 3 favourite books this month. Hopefully this trend continues in June. Here is my belated June TBR as well as the buzzword readathon TBR that I plan to participate in I don't think I will be able to read all the books on my TBR but we shall see!

While You Were Reading - Ali Berg & Michelle Klaus Review

Image
This book follows Bea as she moves to Melbourne to get a new start after ruining her best friend's wedding. Friendless and working at a job she hates, the highlights of her day are her books and getting her daily coffee fix until she discovers a second hand book with beautiful annotations and poems littered throughout. She falls in love with the writing and decides to track down the owner of the book. When I heard that this book is about books, I knew I had to read it! I love reading and finding a book with gorgeous annotations and poetry is every bibliophiles dream. However this did not live up to my expectations. It is in no way a bad book by any means but to me it was just average. I initially loved all the book references in this novel but it quickly got to be too much. It kinda felt like this book was trying too hard. If you are not a BIG reader then this book is probably not for you as some of the references can go over your head. Kinda like someone quoting a movi

Red, White & Royal Blue - Casey McQuiston Review

Image
This is the debut novel by Casey McQuiston and my gosh is it amazing! This book is everything. It will give you ALL the feels! It follows Alex, the First Son of America as he falls in love with his sworn enemy Prince Henry of Wales. This was the cutest story and made me squee so many times. After a confrontation with Henry at his brother's royal wedding, Alex and Henry are covered in a very expensive wedding cake and both sides have to do damage control. Plan of action. Make it look like Alex and Henry are best friends. After a weekend in England doing interviews and staging fake photos, Alex discovers that perhaps Henry isn't the uptight royal he believed him to be. Perhaps there is more to him than meets the eye. A friendship soon blossoms and the back and forth texts between the two would unfreeze any cold dead heart and if that isn't enough, the secret romance that soon begins will have you heating up and keep you turning the pages. I loved everything abo

The Unhoneymooners - Christina Lauren

Image
The Unhoneymooners begins with Olive helping her twin sister Ami get ready for her big day! Ami is the definition of lucky while Olive is the complete opposite. Ami met her fiance in the cutest way possible. Ami wins ever contest she enters. Ami has pretty much financed her entire wedding and honeymoon by winning a series of contests. Olive has just lost her job. Olive is unlucky in love. Olive has to spend the day with Ethan, brother of the groom and her sworn enemy. A twist of fate finds the entire wedding party sick from toxic fish at the buffet except for Olive and Ethan. Ami and her husband urge Olive and Ethan to take the free holiday and while they hate each other, who wouldn't take a free holiday to Hawaii, they'll just have to avoid each other right?! Perhaps Olive's luck is changing? She even gets a call to start a new job when she gets back! Luck is definitely on her side! Right!? Olive's bad luck comes back full force when she finds her new bos

Ignite Me (Shatter Me #3) - Tahereh Mafi Review

Image
Unravel Me ended on quite the cliffhanger. Omega Point was destroyed. Juliette almost died. Are any of the rebels even alive? Is Adam?! Juliette doesn't know but she will not stop at trying to take down the Restablishment once and for all. So much like book two I decided to read the novella that proceeds this book, Fracture Me which is told through the perspective of Adam and much like I predicted, I hate him now!! Warner for the win!! Adam is truly draining in this book. He is only really out for himself and his younger brother. He doesn't care about anyone else and I wanted to reach through the pages and punch him in the face. Seeing his actual feelings when he believes Juliette is dead is like a slap in the face. He only gets worse in Ignite Me! Like the first two books, this mainly focuses on the romance side of things and the real action of the story happens in the last few chapters and honestly ends rather abruptly in my opinion.  Had this been the real last

Unravel Me (Shatter Me #2) - Tahereh Mafi Review

Image
Unravel Me picks up where Shatter Me left off. Juliette and Adam have joined the group of rebels and help in fighting against the Restablishment. Juliette with the help of some new friends who she learns have powers of their own is learning to control her powers when Warner is suddenly back in the picture. I read the novella Destroy Me which follows the perspective of Warner right after the events of the first book and I truly think I would not have enjoyed Unravel Me as much as I did if I hadn't read it first. You get more insight into Warner and learn that he is not the evil dictator that you once believed he was so that when you get to chapter 62 you die of all the feels and not think umm ok where did that come from. Tahereh Mafi has a way making you hate a character and then love them in the next installment and vice versa in a way that is realistic and not have you thinking oh I suddenly have to love this character because the main character likes them or where the

Finale (Caraval #3) - Stephanie Garber Review

Image
This is the last installment of the Caraval series and man is it a bittersweet one. I love this series with all my heart and cannot believe it has ended! I love this entire world and the wonderful cast of characters, so as much as I loved this book I'm also sad that this series has ended. There will be no more new things to discover about this world in the future.  Finale picks up a couple of months after the events of Legendary. The fates have been released from the deck of destiny and Legend has claimed the throne.  Unlike the first two books, there is no game in this one. Everything is very much real. There is no Caraval, just real events and real consequences. This is also told in dual perspective, from Tella and Scarlet's point of views which I think just wraps up both sister's stories nicely. You can get to see both their perspectives and both of their endings. I loved meeting the new cast of characters in this story, the fates truly deserve their own book

Queen of Shadows - Sarah J Maas (Throne of Glass #4)

Image
What a wild ride this book ended up being. Some characters I didn't care for in previous books I ended up really liking and some characters I loved in previous books I ended up not particularly caring about anymore. Sarah J Maas has an amazing ability of making you love a character and by the next book you hate them. Just read the first 2 books in her Court of Thorns and Roses series to understand what I mean. So this book picks up where the last left off. Celeana is back in Rifthold to kill the king of assassins and claim her birthright. Naturally that would be too easy, so many things go wrong and it is disaster after disaster. We meets some new characters in this book which at this point should probably be hard to keep track off but each character is so different from another that it's easy to keep track of everyone. However, unlike the first 3 books I will say by the end of this book I was definitely feeling hopeful, like things were on the right track to a happ

April Reading Wrap-Up & May TBR!

Image
So I completed the O.W.L.s readathon in April and even managed to read some extra books that weren't on my tbr: I read a lot in April so I only added 12 books to my May the and here they are. What are you planning to read in May?

The Assassin's Blade - Sarah J Maas Review

Image
The Assassin's Blade comprises of 5 novellas set before the Throne of Glass series stars. While this is supposed to be read before Throne of Glass I'm glad that I waited to read it part way through the series as I feel like I know who Celeana is and it's interesting to see a little of how she got to be who she was. I feel that if I had read it before the first book I would have been confused.  Through the 5 novellas you get to meet Sam, Celeana's first love and how they went from hate to love. You also find out more about Arobynn and his character. There is also a cast of characters as she travels from remote islands to the red desert, some that you will love and some that you will hate.  This book is a whirlwind of emotions and I can't wait to continue on with the series!

I Spy The Boy Next Door - Samantha Armstrong Review

Image
So the premise of this book sounded like it would be a fun quick read, a home-schooled girl who has a crush on her neighbour and spies on him through her bedroom window finally gets her chance to go to public school and come face to face with her crush. Fun right! Well it was that and so much more! The first three quarters of the book was Mallory navigating through high school for the first time, making new friends, and finding out that Troy, her neighbour and crush is not what he appears. I loved the scenes between Mallory and Troy, the back and forth, the hate he appears to have for her but then all the times when she ever needs him there he is. They made my heart swoon! The last quarter of the book was a wild slightly dark ride indeed! It had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next and I definitely couldn't put the book down and it was not what I was expecting but I loved it! The best part of this story is how throughout the book Mallor

March Reading Wrap-Up and April TBR!

Image
Here is my belated March wrap-up. I read the most books this year in the month of March and even managed to fit in a book for my O.W.L.s TBR thanks to the extra reading days I got for the extra credit charms I did last year. Here are the books I plan on reading in April. I only have O.W.L.s books at this stage as I don't think I will have time to read anything else this month .

O.W.L.'s Magical Readathon Round 2

Round 2 of the O.W.L.'s Magical Readathon is starting again in April, hosted by the wonderful BookRoast over on Youtube. This year's readathon is slightly different from last year's as you can pick a magical career that you can aim for.  This video  has all the rules as well as the links to the Career Guidebook. After much consideration I have decided to try for Curse Breaker this year which has a total of 6 O.W.L.'s you need to achieve. Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Potions and Transfiguration. However as I usually read more than 6 books in a month I have decided to read books for all 12 O.W.L.'s Here is my TBR: Ancient Runes - retellling A Whole New World - Liz Braswell Arithmancy - work written by more than one author If I'm Being Honest - Emily Wibberley, Austin Sigemund Broka Astronomy - 'star in the title' Stardust - Neil Gaiman Care of Magical Creatures - land animal on the cover A Grimm Warn

Harry Potter Spells Tag

I have seen this tag going around and of course I have to do all the Harry Potter tags that I can find. I'm not sure who originally created this but if I find out I will leave a link. Flagrate - writing charm Book you found interesting but would rewrite. Pride, Prejudice and Mistletoe - Melissa De La Cruz - I loved that this was a gender swap retelling of Pride and Prejudice set in the holidays but it was just an average read for me. Alohomora - unlocking charm A first book in a series that got you hooked. Throne of Glass - Sarah J Maas - this book hooked me in the first few pages. The story, the writing - I loved it all! Accio - summoning spell A book that you wish you had right now. Finale - Stephanie Garber - I need this book like yesterday. June can't come fast enough! Avada Kedavra - killing curse A killer book. Throne of Glass - Sarah J Maas - the main characters is literally an assassin, nothing else to be said! Confundo - confusion charm A book

Heir of Fire - Sarah J Maas (Throne of Glass #3)

Image
In Heir of Fire we learn a lot more about Celaena and her heritage and we meet an array of new characters. While this series is quickly becoming one of my favourites, I have to admit I did not love this book as much as I liked the other two and that was mainly because of the addition of Manon and the other witches. I found the scenes with them tedious and it made me want to put the book down.  I did love the other new characters that were included especially Rowan and this book had some beautiful quotes in it. 'I claim you to whatever end,' 'She would bow to no one' and 'and then I am going to rattle the stars.'  I feel as the series goes on more and more trouble is around the corner. Like you think OK they just need to solve this crises and then everything will be OK but then something worse happens and then something even worse. If you think you know where Sarah J Maas is going with the story then you are wrong, there are twists and turns around

February Reading Wrap-Up and March TBR!

Image
Here is a list of the books I read in February: These are the books I will be reading in March. I completed all the books on my February TBR and a few extra so I hope this trend continues this month.
